JM Steel is joining the Sinton location of the Steel Dynamics flat roll steel mill. The company announced recently it would be “expanding its footprint substantially over the next two years.” The enterprise expects to hire 50 employees, which will be added to the 600 workers Steel Dynamics has estimated for its $1.9 billion operation.
“Steel Dynamics Inc. has invited us to be part of their newest flat roll steel mill located in Sinton in Texas just outside of Corpus Christi,” said Tony Calandra, president of Frank Calandra Inc. and Calandra Group LLC. “The new mill will target regional marketplace drive by manufacturing, automotive, construction, transportation, and energy markets.”
The mill is expected to produce 3 million tons per year using next generation electric art furnace technology, he continued.
The plant will include three slitting lines designed to produce 30,000 tons of steel a month, each line capable of a different size.
“With these characteristics, JM Steel will have the largest, most capable slitter in the United States,” Calandra said. “The new location gives JM Steel Sinton excellent export opportunities to supplement its core ground control business of JENNMAR.”
The plant should be ready to roll by June 30, 2021. Lighter-gauge slitters are planned for years three and four, with additions of laser cutting and press braking capabilities.
The new facility will also create two roll forming lines and will have a stamping press to produce 260,000 bolts per month for markets in Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Chile, and Peru.
“This is great news for our region,” President and CEO of Corpus Christie Regional Economic Development Corporation Iain Vasey said in the release. “The impact of the SDI project, JM Steel, and the future companies that will follow them will continue to benefit our region for many years to come, providing high-paying jobs for residents of the Coastal Bend.”
