December 10 (Renewables Now) - Swedish thin-film solar technology company Midsummer AB (STO:MIDS) announced that it has signed a five-year agreement to sell a total of 17.5 MW of its CIGS modules to Italian metal roofs manufacturer Medacciai.
Under the agreement, Medacciai is to purchase up to 3.5 MW of Midsummer’s Italian-made thin-film CIGS modules per year, paying EUR 6.3 million (USD 7.1m) annually for five years. This puts the total contract value at EUR 31.5 million, Midsummer said.
Southern Italy-based Medacciai specialises in making curved metal roofs for commercial buildings such as hangars, factories, sports arenas and other similar structures. The company will apply Midsummer’s panels to its iCurvi curved metal roof product and other roofs they manufacture, the Swedish firm said.
The new partners also signed another agreement, which sees Midsummer Italia committing to buy up to 50,000 square metres (538,200 sq ft) of metal roofs from Medacciai for EUR 3 million per year for five years. Midsummer stated that quantities under this agreement are not binding, and the established price may also change.
Nevertheless, the plan is to sell these roofs together with Midsummer’s solar panels to the Italian market.
Finally, the companies agreed to jointly commercialise a new product, called Panel Energy, described as an energy producing metal roof that incorporates solutions from both Medacciai and Midsummer.
"The Italian real-estate-restructuring sector is currently booming, mostly due to the 110 percent tax rebate for solar panels that has been extended till the end of 2023. Medacciai is riding this restructuring growth wave with its products and is also considering expanding its production. We at Midsummer are ready to support Medacciai all the way," commented Jarno Montella, Manager of Midsummer Italia
Midsummer’s Italian unit will soon start production of light, discreet thin-film solar cells, including solar roofs, at its factory in Bari, the Swedish company added.
